This is a personal project to explore, document, reflect, write, and advocate for protection of what I’ll the call the Grand Rimlands.
The Grand Rimlands are the belts of land surrounding the Grand Canyon. The rim terrain varies from lowland sagebrush desert plains to high country subalpine meadows and forests. The Grand Rimlands make up the Grand Canyon’s vital immediate watershed zone and are ecologically connected with the Canyon. They are the shoulderscape to the chasm.
The Grand Rimlands are places, I’ll make the argument, that deserve the same level of respect and devotion that justly go to the Canyon. But they are often overlooked or briskly experienced. Here, I’ll work to examine these plateaus through the lens of my own experiences in addition to performing historical research, cultural explication, ecological dives, and more. This project will take the form of blog pieces but hopefully will get tied together into a bigger framework over time.
My goal is to get you, reader, to appreciate and then support the Grand Rimlands. Doing so builds a trust beyond myself - a collective desire to project this landscape long term. Maybe you’ll even come and know this place by breath and step. I hope you’ll leave disappointed with the sharp thirst of needing more time here.
First, I want to offer a rough boundary for the Grand Rimlands.
