BOLT Report: Long Live Long Trails!
This is a report that’s been a long time coming and just as exciting.
@bikepackingroots has been engaged for the last few years with @imba and @peopleforbikes in the BOLT Coalition - a working group formed to identify existing and potential long-distance trails for consideration of BOLT Act recognition.
First, some background on the BOLT ACT: On January 4, 2025, the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences Act (EXPLORE Act) was signed into law. The EXPLORE package contains the BOLT, or Biking on Long Distance Trails Act, an exciting piece of legislation that the mountain biking, bikepacking, and broad cycling communities have been advocating in support of for over a decade.
Enter the BOLT Coalition, which sought to generate an informed list of trails meeting the criteria for BOLT consideration. They worked hard to survey the cycling community to gather a list of trails that may meet the criteria.
And now the BOLT Report is out! It features:
20 Existing Trails identified in 12 states
5,232 miles of existing trails, managed by 3 land management agencies (USFS, BLM, NPS)
13 Potential Trails identified in 10 states
